‘Innovations in the electrification of aircraft’
Entretiens Jacques Cartier 2019
November 4th, 2019 in Montreal
The pressure is strong today to reduce environmental footprints related to our movements. By 2050, for example, the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions from air travel by 50%, while taking into account a doubling of traffic. Beyond weight reduction, aircraft drag, these objectives need to evaluate at least potential paradigm shifts in propulsion, to solutions at least partly electrical. This evolution towards the electrification of aircraft implies real transformations and therefore to re-design the systems in their entirety, with problems integrating the batteries themselves, electricity, power electronics of course but also the thermal , fluidics, materials, mechanical design and vibrations, or, more importantly, non-destructive testing and risk analysis. The electric aircraft is very different from the thermal, so it is not just a matter of changing the type of engine.
The conference co-organized on this theme, by the Carnot Ingenierie@Lyon, the Aerospace Institutes of Montreal, AéroMontréal, the Cluster Aerospace and supported by CRIAQ was able to highlight and compare the ongoing research to make the aircraft electric or hybrid more efficient, safer and globally acceptable by society and companies, but also by certification bodies.
A rich day, with more than 110 registered and both scientific and industrial perspectives thanks to an excellent balance in the typology of the presentations.
